Homework. Does the word strike terror in your heart? It should....
I detest homework for children. I detested it as a student and learned to loathe it as a parent. And as I see it creeping nefariously into my grandchildren's lives, the loathing is tinged with a fear. Homework is a growing blob, wiping out what should be a child's main occupation ~ play.
This is an interesting quote from a link on Elliott's blog.
~A child counselor from Arizona who believes that children shouldn’t be given homework before sixth grade has taken to the streets to protest homework. According to azfamily.com, the counselor, who is leading the weeklong protest at a street corner, doesn’t think children should be given homework before sixth grade. “They’re already getting in trouble in school for not being able to sit for six hours,” she said. “Now they’ve gotta come home and do homework. So, now mom is screaming at them to do their homework. It’s slavery is what it is. It’s a horrible job. It’s a six-, seven-, eight-hour job that they’re not getting paid for.”~
We teach our children that they need to have quiet time to learn to think, to learn to listen to the whisperings of the Spirit. How can one be still and know that He is God, when there is so much busywork in one's life? Between homework, music, computer and video games, our ability to teach our children to 'be still' is becoming a lost art.

Carla I so agree with you. I taught 6th grade and still felt that the children should be able to get all they needed out of the time spent at school and that home was for playing, having family and all of the outside activities that help a child to grow. Wish our teachers and schools felt the same way.
Amen.
I don't remember having homework until 5th grade, (besides spelling words) and that was mostly a report here and there. The kids around here have tons of homework starting in kindergarten. I've requested the teacher w/ a little less homework, but they all have a lot. I wish they didn't. Good luck to this counselor guy.
