This little video is a short tour of a family who lives just a couple of miles from us. If you'd like to know more about them and their homesteading, see here.

Mom, what are the best vegetables to grow in the winter, and are there any fruits to start now?

Winter vegetables are best planted in late September/early October; however, you can try some small bedding plants of lettuce, broccoli and cabbage. Seed any type of root veggie now ~ beets and carrots grow well in cooler weather. You can plant radishes which should should be ready to eat in about a month.
Just be sure to nourish the soil before you plant. :)
Fruit trees will be available as bare root in December/January. Check out your local nursery and talk to them about your particular area. And don't forget how delicious the Pluots are!

I came back to watch again, and this time showed it to Nate as well. I think we've decided what we want in the back now. Too bad we don't have that much space -- we'll definitely have to go vertical.
