What to Do With a Noisy Hen

What does one do with a noisy hen? A hen who squawks an odd squawk that ends on a note which resembles the honk of a goose? A hen who squawks at 6am, and sounds as if she's in labor before finally laying an egg?
One rehomes her, of course.
Pepper, our beautiful Silver Cuckoo Maran has gone to live with my good friend Katie and her little flock.
Our next door neighbor had mentioned being woken by the squawking. (They like to sleep in really late.)
He had mentioned it in a casual way, but  I knew that Pepper's life with us was doomed. We drove to Katie's yesterday, bringing Pepper in a cat carrier box.
She talked the entire way there of course, albeit softly. (Why didn't she do 'softly' at home?)
Shy with the other eight hens at first, less than ten minutes later Pepper was bumping chests with the head hen of the new flock. Feathers sticking straight out, their manes creating a scary looking halo around their faces, each hen attempted to cow the other into submission. Katie broke it up after a minute, but I'm sure there will be more face-offs as a new flock hierarchy is created.
I was sad to be leaving Pepper in this new environment. Could she find the water and food? Could she even find her way back into the coop at night?
Katie let me know that later in the afternoon, Pepper was scratching in the oak leaves with the other hens.
At bedtime she marched into the coop and onto a roost.
I'm feeling much better now. And enjoying the new morning quiet.
