Honey knew there would be a mad rush for the nest, and she was correct. She had the box all to herself for awhile, then Pepper began squawking to use it.
Honey politely ignored her.
Pepper then decided she could just make her way in, so she did. For a while Honey stood in front of the nest box, slooooowly making her way back in.... I don't know how she did it, as Pepper is the dominant hen of these three. (MoMo being THE head queen, apparently.)
Honey slowly edged her way back into the nest box, and Pepper was out.
Then it all began again.
Pepper is carefully biding her manuever, an inch at a time into the box, careful of Honey. Because one never knows how a chicken will react while laying an egg.
Chicken hormones, you know, do odd things to some meek hens.
The end result was two chickens in the nest box. It's just barely big enough for one.... perfectly cozy and peaceful. Unless there are two hens needing to do their job at the same time.
Why don't I just get another nest box you ask? Well, yes. Another is in the works. But chickens don't think like you or me. A chicken generally wants the nest box which already holds a chicken or eggs. So there may be more nest box fun and games in the future.
Looks like all the girls made their way into the nest box this morning.
