Huntington Gardens

We took the kids to see the beautiful Huntington Gardens today. We explored the children's garden which is always fun. The steamy indoor tropical gardens, with its insect devouring plants is fascinating. There is lots for all to see and learn about there. The grounds are beautiful, and expansive. The kids couldn't believe that real people, the family of Henry E. Huntington, had actually lived in this 150 acre wonderland.
As we sat in a shaded walkway, with a beautiful view of the Japanese Garden, I remarked to your dad that without some people having private wealth, there would be no one able to build these amazing institutions for the public to visit.
The gardens, and other places like them, took vision and an immense amount of money to build and maintain. And they continue to need private vision and private money to sustain them.
There are those who would seek to make all people the same; those who seek to bring all people to the same level. And I know full well that level would be mediocrity.
This is a very frightening future for me.
