Last Saturday I stood at a street corner, holding signs of Vote Yes on Prop 8. We had lots of friendly responses from the drivers... some honking their horns, others giving us a thumbs up, waving to us. Some responses were less than friendly. This was expected. The man who drove up about an hour later with his 8 year old daughter was not expected. And frankly, it made me sick. And really mad at the guy.
He must have been tooling about, looking for a group of signs. When he spotted us, he pulled to the curb, hurridly retrieved two NO on 8 signs and his daughter, then dashed across the street with all in tow. Before he reached the curb, I blurted out "Why did you bring your daughter? She shouldn't be here with all of this." His stupid reply was "Why? Are you going to do something you shouldn't?" or some such idiotic response.
He was a lawyer and a know-it-all, though those two don't always go together. His sweet little daughter hadn't a clue why she was there, holding a sign with cars whizzing by and her father arguing with other adults all standing above her. I didn't debate for long; I didn't want the child to experience this.
I heard him mock Mormons (which he assumed wrongly we all were) and their 'magical underwear', the fact that we don't drink alcohol and that we believe in eternal marriage. This guy repeatedly referred to his 'husband'. ~This makes me cringe to type.~
He also referred to scripture (he is a Christian, of course) and declared there was nothing written scripturally about homosexuals. Marriage was important to homosexuals because otherwise they would be adulterers. Because his child was from a previous marriage, I thought his scriptural notes were a little incongruous, but kept that observation to myself. Over and over he told his daughter that they were a traditional family, ie. they went to soccer practice and said prayer and did other traditional things.
I realized soon enough that he was using this little girl. She was vulnerable and trusting her father, and he was simply using her as a prop.... as evidence that he was part of a lifestyle that was like any other mainstream family.
He couldn't begin to approach even a lousy excuse for a Mother.
The whole thing made my stomach turn and there was nothing to be done about it.
